In the spirit of Tracy Wong coming to the #UOcreativestrat class tomorrow, I thought I would dedicate a post to some great work Wong, Doody, Crandall, Wiener has been doing in the community. After recently connecting with recent UO ad grad Jake Matthews, now a WDCW employee, I got some insight about a project the agency has been working on. Creative director Court Crandall, writer of the original draft of “Old School,” was inspired by a number of students from Compton high school who defied the negative stereotypes of the city. He found that many of them lacked the financial support to pursue college, and he wanted to do something about it. “Free Throw,” is not only a movie (that premiers TOMORROW, by the way), but also a fundraising initiative granting students money that will go towards achieving a higher education.
The initiative brought in more money than Crandall and his team expected. One lucky winner of $40k also received a full ride to Cal State Northridge for basketball, and he decided to give all of his winnings away to his seven fellow contestants. His story was shared on Yahoo!, CNN, ESPN, The Huffington Post, Today/MSNBC, CBS Sports and more. What has developed out of the initiative is something they only dreamed of.
